Citi has added American Airlines AAdvantage® as a new 1:1 transfer partner, allowing you to transfer ThankYou® Points to AAdvantage miles. This is a major development in the points and miles ecosystem, especially considering that American Airlines has long been one of the few U.S. carriers without a major transferable points partner.

And the timing couldn’t be more strategic. In December 2024, American Airlines and Citi announced they would be expanding their 37+ year partnership — with Citi becoming the exclusive issuer of American’s AAdvantage® co-branded credit cards in the U.S. beginning in 2026. The deal includes a full transition of the Barclays AAdvantage portfolio over to Citi.
What Does This Mean for Travelers and Cardholders?
Previously, AAdvantage miles were a bit of a “closed ecosystem.” You could earn them through flying, shopping portals, AA Hotels, SimplyMiles, and co-branded credit cards — but you couldn’t transfer in points from any of the major bank rewards programs once Bilt ended its relationship with AA in 2023.
Now, Citi cardholders — including those with the Citi Strata Premier℠ or legacy Citi Premier® Card — can transfer their ThankYou Points directly to American Airlines at a 1:1 ratio. That’s 1,000 ThankYou Points = 1,000 AAdvantage miles.
This is especially important for anyone trying to build up a stash of AA miles without flying or opening a new co-branded card.
Why This Is a Big Deal for Citi
This move aligns perfectly with Citi’s broader strategy to become more competitive in the travel rewards space. Over the past year, Citi has:
- Launched the Citi Strata Premier℠, a revamped travel rewards card
- Refreshed the Rewards+® Card
- Announced it will become the exclusive U.S. issuer of American Airlines AAdvantage cards in 2026
- Expanded its ThankYou® transfer partners with valuable additions like Qatar Privilege Club and now AAdvantage
If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I always stress the importance of building flexible points and diversifying across programs. This move proves that Citi ThankYou points are now more valuable than ever — and in some ways, more versatile than Chase or Amex, depending on your travel goals.
Sweet Spots for Redeeming AAdvantage Miles
American Airlines miles can unlock some excellent international redemptions, especially through its Oneworld and non-alliance partners. Some of the most compelling sweet spots include:
-
Japan Airlines (JAL)
-
60,000 miles one-way in business class to Japan
-
80,000 miles one-way in first class
-
-
Qatar Airways Qsuites
-
70,000–75,000 miles one-way to the Middle East or Africa
-
-
AA Saver Awards
-
Domestic economy redemptions starting as low as 7,500 miles
-
-
Off-Peak International Fares
-
Great value to regions like Europe, the Caribbean, and South America
-
Because AAdvantage still uses a region-based chart for its partners, you can often extract outsized value on long-haul and premium cabin redemptions.
Final Thoughts
With this new transfer partnership and the upcoming transition of all AAdvantage co-branded cards under Citi, it’s clear that Citi is doubling down on its role in the travel rewards space. This also makes ThankYou Points one of the only flexible currencies that now transfer to both Qatar Airways and American Airlines, giving travelers easier access to some of the world’s most luxurious award redemptions.
If you have Citi ThankYou Points and no AAdvantage miles, now you can book directly through AA — without ever stepping foot on a plane to earn them.
